Rathbones' Annual Charity Symposium 2012

12 September 2012

Rathbones’ Annual Charity Symposium 2012 took place on the afternoon of Wednesday 12 September at the British Museum, London. Around 300 charity trustees and their advisers joined Rathbones charity investment managers for an afternoon of stimulating presentations and debate which addressed current financial and legislative issues within the sector.

The seminar started with James Codrington, investment director at Rathbones, considering the impact that rising inflation has had on commodities, in particular the price of food. James’ thought provoking presentation elicited many questions from the audience, all of which were subsequently answered with a rather impressive level of academic background.

A panel discussion which pitted members of Rathbones’ charity team against each other in a balloon style debate followed. Representing four asset classes that have the potential to deliver income in a low return environment, the team presented their assets to the audience. The initial audience vote identified overseas equities as their most likable asset, while the final vote revealed that the audience’s most popular asset class had changed to ‘plain and boring’ infrastructure.

Following a short break, Mark Spofforth, president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales, took the stage to examine the outcomes of Lord Hodgson’s review of the Charity Act 2006. Considering potential changes and the impact that these may have, Mark concluded with his recommendations for the charity sector, stating that "the charity sector has done well to build public trust, now it needs to retain it".

Bringing the seminar to a close, Lawrence Dallaglio OBE talked about his experience of leading the pack, in both his rugby career and his charity, the Dallaglio Foundation. Touching on key success factors and lessons learned, Lawrence concluded by recommending that "we challenge ourselves and the teams around us to look at things and people in a new way".

After the seminar, many delegates stayed for drinks, canapés and an opportunity to spend time with peers from across the sector.

We look forward to announcing the date for next years’ Charity Symposium in early 2013.
