David graduated from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in 2009 with a BA (Hons) Financial & Business Economics and a MSc in Banking & Finance. He spent eight years at Brewin Dolphin, prior to joining Rathbones in 2020.

David is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment, a Chartered Wealth Manager and a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) charterholder.

David joined Rathbones in June 2014 and is the lead fund manager of the Rathbone Greenbank Global Sustainability Fund.  He has more than 20 years’ experience in equity analysis and fund management, including positions at Hermes and Goldman Sachs.  David holds the Investment Management Certificate and a BSc (Hons) in Economics and Politics from the University of Southampton. He is a CFA charter-holder.

David Kness is an Investment Director in our Winchester office and is responsible for managing a wide variety of portfolios for private clients. He has over 15 years’ experience in the industry. David sits on various committees and specialist teams within Rathbones involving Entrepreneur and Divorce clients. 

David is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment. His career began in the City of London with PSigma Investment Management before joining Rathbones in 2012. David graduated from the University of Surrey with an honours degree in Economics. 

He has received multiple awards in the wealth management industry including Citywealth Investment Director of the Year 2022, Citywealth Investment Manager of the Year 2021 (Gold), inclusion in the Citywealth Future Leaders Top 100, PAM Top 40 under 40 and Wealth Manager Top 30 under 30.

David is an investment director and has managed investments for private individuals, trusts, pension funds and charities for over 30 years. Elected to the London Stock Exchange in 1989, David is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments at full diploma level achieved with distinction and a graduate of Edinburgh University. 

David joined Rathbones in August 2000 after three years with Merrill Lynch setting up this group's Scottish business. Prior to joining Merrill Lynch, he spent 11 years with the Scottish stockbrokers, Bell Lawrie, rising to director level on the private client side. David is one of our senior investment managers looking after some £300m of client funds and  previously headed up the Edinburgh office overseeing its growth to the largest office in terms of funds under management outside London at just over £2.5bn. He works with fellow directors, Charles Younger and Nick Liddle and is supported by investment manager, Jonathan Brock, assistant investment manager, James Coppell and PA, Julie Loudon.

David joined the professional funds department of Simon & Coates (S&C) Private Clients division in 1984. S&C was taken over by Chase Manhattan at the time of Big Bang in 1986 and when Chase exited securities in 1989, the professional funds team joined Tilney. In 2007 Tilney was sold to Deutsche Bank (DB) and David and his immediate colleagues eventually transferred to Rathbones in June 2014.

David acts as relationship and fund manager to approximately 100 clients and also formulates the investments strategies for the entire team that transferred from DB via the management of four model portfolios.

David also has expertise working with multi-generational family businesses, managing all their investment needs and helping them to both grow and preserve their wealth. He began his career in financial services in 1997 with Greig Middleton who became Gerrard and eventually Barclays Wealth. David joined RBC Brewin Dolphin in 2010 before moving to Rathbones in 2023. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment, David is a Trustee of The Trades House of Glasgow, chairing the Investment Committee. He is also a Trustee of the Incorporation of Maltmen in Glasgow, a charity that supports educational excellence and funds good causes connected to the drinks and hospitality sector. His hobbies include rugby, football and golf.

He has a large professional network and works hard to ensure his clients receive the best possible outcomes and ongoing service.

David has been recognised as one the UK’s leading HNW Wealth Managers in the Spear’s 500, is highlighted on the Citywealth Leaders List and earlier in his career was named in Private Client Practitioner’s Top 35 under 35 on three occasions. He was awarded the inaugural Spear’s ‘young turk’ Wealth Manager of the Year title in 2012.

David joined Greenbank in January 2020, he is an investment director specialising in managing ethical portfolios on behalf of private clients, trust and charities. David previously worked as an analyst in Henley-on-Thames before making the move to Bristol to join the Greenbank team. David read Economics at the University of Manchester and is a CFA charterholder.
