Mark Nicholls

Mark is a lawyer and corporate financier and was appointed as chairman at our 2011 AGM. After studying law at Cambridge, he qualified as a solicitor at Linklaters before joining S G Warburg in 1976. He became a director in 1984 and head of investment banking in 1994. In 1996 he joined Royal Bank of Scotland and became head of their private equity group, leaving in 2003 to pursue a plural career.

He is currently chairman of the West Bromwich Building Society. He is considered to be independent.

Paul was appointed chief executive in May 2019, having served as managing director of Rathbone Investment Management from May 2018. He was previously group finance director from 2008 to April 2019.

Paul qualified as a chartered accountant with PriceWaterhouse in 1992, subsequently taking up a position in New York before returning to London in 1996. In 1999 he joined Old Mutual Plc as group financial controller, becoming director of finance of Gerrard Limited in 2001. In 2005, two years after the sale of Gerrard, he left to work initially for Euroclear and, subsequently, as a divisional finance director of the Phoenix Group. He was formerly a non-executive director of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

Jennifer Mathias

Jennifer was appointed to the board on 1 April 2019.

She began her career on the Lloyds TSB Finance graduate scheme following her graduation in 1995, and qualified as chartered management accountant in 1999. At Lloyds, Jennifer held a number of senior management roles and worked closely with the board-level team of the Lloyds TSB Group, and was a member of the Corporate Banking and Wholesale Finance Executive Committees. In addition to her position as a finance director of Corporate Banking, Jennifer spent three years as head of Credit Risk & Compliance for the Commercial Banking division of Lloyds TSB. In 2012, she joined Coutts as the global chief finance officer, and in 2015, she moved to EFG Private Bank (UK), where she was chief finance officer and deputy chief executive officer.

Sarah Gentleman

Sarah was appointed as a non-executive director in 2015 and chair of the Remuneration Committee in June 2017. She was appointed as a designated non-executive director for our workforce engagement in 2019 along with Colin Clark.

She started her career as a consultant at McKinsey & Company and then worked for several years in the telecoms and digital sectors, latterly as chief financial officer of the LCR Telecom Group. In 1999, she joined the internet bank Egg, the internet banking subsidiary of Prudential, where she was responsible for business development and strategy. In 2005, she joined Sanford C. Bernstein & Co, the institutional research and trading arm of Alliance Bernstein, as a banking analyst covering the European banking sector. Sarah is also an adviser to early-stage technology companies.

Terri was appointed as a non-executive director in July 2018 and is chair of the risk committee.

Terri is currently a non-executive director on the board of Morgan Stanley International where she chairs the risk committee and is also chair of Morgan Stanley Investment Management Limited. She is an Associate Fellow at The Saïd Business School at Oxford University and on the MIT Corporation Visiting Committee. Previously, Terri sat on the boards of CHAPS Co and UK Operation Smile and was a founding member of the Women’s Leadership Group for the Prince’s Trust. As an executive, Terri held a number of senior roles at JP Morgan and ABN AMRO before setting up her own consultancy firm.

James was appointed as a non-executive director in 2013 and is chair of the audit committee.

He is a chartered accountant with over 30 years’ experience working in financial services. He has worked in a variety of roles at Ernst & Young over a period of 14 years, including holding the position of managing partner for the UK Financial Services Audit Practice for four years. He is currently chairman of The Stafford Railway Building Society.

Jim was appointed as a non-executive director at our 2017 AGM and was appointed as senior independent director in August 2017.

He is a chartered accountant and was formerly president of ICAS, chief executive officer of CMC Markets plc, chief operating officer of Ashmore Group plc, and group finance director of ICAP plc. He was previously a non-executive chairman of Virgin Money UK, Miton Group Plc and RBC Europe Ltd. Jim was also a non-executive director of Scottish Financial Enterprise, Aberdeen Asset Management plc, AON UK Ltd, Hermes Fund Managers Ltd, Crest Nicholson Plc and Edinburgh Investment Trust Plc.

Colin Clark

Colin was appointed as a non-executive director in October 2018 and a designated non-executive director for our workforce engagement programme in 2019.

He is currently chairman of Merchants Trust Plc and a non-executive director of AXA Investment Management SA, and AXA Investment Managers UK. Previously, Colin worked at Mercury Asset Management and Merrill Lynch Investment Managers for over 20 years. In 2004, he was appointed a non-executive director at Standard Life Investments, and in 2010, he was appointed as an executive director of Standard Life Investments. He was appointed to the Standard Life Plc board as an executive director with responsibility for the Global Wealth Group and retired from this position in 2017. He was previously a non-executive director of Alpha Strategic Plc, and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

Aaron is a senior financial planner in London with over 10 years of experience in financial services, and has joined Rathbones from Kleinwort Benson, where he was head of financial planning. Prior to this he worked with the financial planning team at Lloyds Private Bank covering their London Mayfair office.

Aaron is a Chartered Financial Planner, a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society, and is a qualified Trust and Estate Practitioner, with a specialist qualification in UK Tax Planning for International Clients, from The Society for Trusts and Estate Planning (STEP).

Aaron has significant experience in providing holistic financial advice to individuals, corporates, and trustees. He helps clients across a broad range of areas including protecting their wealth, retirement planning, investment structuring, and has a particular interest in advising on complex tax and succession planning.

Abigail Parker

Abigail joined Rathbone Greenbank in 2018. She started her career with Computershare Investor Services in 2011 working in the correspondence and then gilts & structured product teams. Abigail specialised as a dividend officer at Computershare from 2016 paying dividends for a number of FTSE 100 clients.

Adam is a regional director and manages investment portfolios for clients ranging from individuals and families to trusts, pension funds and charitable organisations. He joined Speirs & Jeffrey in 2010 and is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment.

He graduated from the University of St Andrews with an honours degree in Business Management. He then studied for a postgraduate qualification in Investment & Finance at the University of Strathclyde before joining Speirs & Jeffrey in 2010 and becoming a director. Speirs & Jeffrey was fully integrated with Rathbones in July 2019.

Adam is an investment manager and has worked in private client investment management since 2011. He joined Rathbones in 2017 having previously worked at Redmayne-Bentley.

Adam completed a Masters in Wealth Management in 2017. This is the highest qualification the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment offers. He graduated from University in 2008 with a 2:1 degree in Business Management with Finance and Economics.

Adam specialises in discretionary investment management for private clients, trusts, charities and personal pension funds (SIPPs).

Adam is an investment director, having joined Rathbones in November 2019 from Aberdeen Standard Capital where he was a senior portfolio manager. Working with Will Kinman, he manages discretionary investment portfolios for UK & offshore domiciled individuals, companies and trusts.

Adam has over 20 years of investment experience managing portfolios for both institutional and private clients. He is a CFA charterholder and a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and holds a degree in Business Studies from the University of the West of England, Bristol.

Adrian joined Rathbones in 2004 after graduating from the University of Liverpool with an honours degree in Financial Economics.

He specialises in the management of portfolios for charities, as part of Rathbones’ charity team, as well as managing private clients’ assets including ISAs, SIPPs and trusts.

Adrian is a CFA charterholder (Chartered Financial Analyst) as well as a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI). He is a member of Rathbones group Stock Selection Committee and chairs the Charity Fixed Income and Collectives Committee.

Aimee Barker

Aimee is an assistant investment manager with Rathbone Investment Management International in Jersey. She graduated from Jersey International Business School with a first class honours degree in International Financial Services, awarded by the University of Buckingham. Aimee subsequently joined Rathbones in September 2017 as part of the Rathbone graduate entry programme.

She is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment, having passed in 2019 the Level 6 Certificate in Private Client Investment Advice & Management (PCIAM) with merit. Aimee also holds the Investment Advice Diploma.

Alan Dobbie

Alan joined Rathbones in October 2005. He became co-manager of the Rathbone Income Fund in October 2018. Alan has previously managed and co-managed a number of UK, European and global equity funds for Rathbones.

He graduated from the University of Strathclyde with an MSc Finance and also holds degrees in Accounting & Finance and Chemical Sciences from the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, respectively. Alan holds the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder.

Alan is an investment director for Rathbone Investment Management International and manages a range of private client, trust, corporate and charity portfolios. Alan is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment.

Alan began his career in offshore finance in 1987 with AIB Bank in Jersey and prior to joining Rathbones in October 2012, he was responsible for AIB’s offshore investment proposition.

Shortly after joining Rathbones in 2015, Alanah completed her Diploma in Financial Planning from the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII). She obtained Chartered Financial Planner status in December 2018 and shortly after became a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society (PFS) in June 2019. 

She has over nine years’ experience in the industry having previously worked for Brewin Dolphin assisting two financial planners. She has also spent time working from our Newcastle office.

Alanah provides tailored financial planning advice to our private clients in retirement accumulation and decumulation stages, tax-efficient investments and structures, estate planning and protection planning.

Alastair Childs

Alastair is an investment director and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment.

Alastair has spent his entire working career in private client investment management in London, starting in 1984 at Vickers da Costa. Alastair joined Laurence Keen, which subsequently became part of Rathbones, in 1992.

Alastair is an investment director and Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment. He manages portfolios for a wide range of clients including private individuals, trusts and charities. His particular areas of interest include macroeconomics, technical analysis and alternative asset classes.

Alastair graduated from Durham University with an honours degree in Engineering. His financial career began at KPMG and Blackadders solicitors’ investment department before joining Speirs & Jeffrey in 2004. Speirs & Jeffrey was fully integrated with Rathbones in July 2019.

Alastair is a Chartered Wealth Manager and Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment. He has a law degree from The University of Dundee as well as an MBA from the University of Strathclyde Graduate School of Business.
 
He joined James Finlay Investment Management in 1987 where he worked as an investment manager until the company was acquired by Brewin Dolphin in 1996 where he served as a divisional director until joining Rathbones in 2015. 
 
Alastair has over 25 years of experience in private client investment management. He grew up in England but was educated in Scotland and works across the UK with a diverse client base specialising in the management of family wealth. He has long experience in collectives management as well as direct equity and bond market investment.
 
He has been a member of the Glasgow City Committee for Macmillan Cancer Support for the past ten years.

Alex joined Rathbones as an investment director in 2002 and manages a large portfolio of high net worth private clients, their SIPPs and associated trusts. He started his investment career in London over 30 years ago at Henderson Administration where he trained. He subsequently helped establish the private client fund management department within Murray Johnstone before moving to Premier Asset Management.

Alex is a Chartered Wealth Manager and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments.

Alex is an investment director, he has a joint honours degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from UEA. Alex is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments, holding the Diploma, and is also a Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder.

Prior to joining Rathbones in December 2007, Alex worked at HSBC Investments (formerly James Capel) for eight years managing investment portfolios for charities and private clients. At HSBC Alex was a member of the UK Stock Committee and specifically covered the engineering, aerospace and defence sectors.

Alex is head of collectives research for Rathbones. He is responsible for carrying out quantitative and qualitative analysis to select funds for recommended use within portfolios managed at Rathbones across different asset classes and strategies. He sits on Rathbone’s Collectives Research Committees and also assists the Rathbone multi-asset portfolios team with their collectives’ investments.

Alex joined Rathbones in May 2015. Prior to joining, he worked for the British Steel Pension Fund and Dimensional Fund Advisors, specialising in Asia-Pacific and Emerging Markets equity portfolio management. Alex graduated from the University of Durham with a BA (Hons) in Economics. He holds the Investment Management Certificate, is a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment, and is a CFA charterholder.

Alex is director of tax at Rathbones and has been advising private clients and business owners for 20 years. He specialises in providing capital gains and inheritance tax advice and has a wide range of experience in  all areas of private trust work.

Alex Turnbull

Alex is an investment director, his main focus is in managing assets for the not for profit, pension and corporate sector with a bias towards structuring segregated asset portfolios. He has particular expertise in corporate debt and equities, and where possible has a preference for direct investment of these asset classes. He chairs the Charity Asset Allocation and Stock Committee and also sits on the UK Equity and Fixed Income Committee for the Investment Management division of Rathbones.
Alex is Chartered Fellow of the Securities Institute and holds the Securities Institute Diploma, having qualified in 1989. Prior to joining Rathbones in 2008, he spent 20 years at HSBC Global Asset Management (formerly James Capel) where he was responsible for developing and leading the successful Charity division.

Alex is a Chartered Financial Planner, a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society and also holds the Investment Management Certificate (CFA). He joined Rathbones in 2019 and has significant knowledge and experience in providing the advice and direction which enables clients to meet their financial goals.

Alex helps on a broad range of areas including investment structuring, wealth preservation, retirement planning and legacy planning.

Previously, Alex managed the financial planning team at Kleinwort Benson and was awarded “Best Wealth Planning Team” at the WealthBriefing European Awards, 2017.

Alexandra manages the Rathbone UK Opportunities Fund (previously called Rathbone Recovery Fund). She was appointed as co-manager in June 2014 and took over as sole manager in August 2017, specialising in small and mid-cap UK equities.

Alexandra joined Rathbone Unit Trust Management in 2007 as an equity analyst and then became assistant fund manager on the Rathbone Global Opportunities Fund.

Alexandra is a CFA charterholder, holds the IMC and has a BA (Hons) in Economics from the University of Durham. She is a member of the Rathbone Investment Management Stock Selection Committee.

Alexandra joined Rathbones in 2017, having previously been a senior associate in the Private Client team at Wedlake Bell LLP. Alexandra qualified as a solicitor in 2007, having trained at Mills & Reeve LLP.

Alexandra specialises in UK and offshore tax and trusts and is particularly experienced in: advising on and implementing tax-efficient strategies for both UK and non-UK domiciliaries; advising in relation to onshore and offshore trusts; trust drafting; succession planning including drafting complex wills; administering estates (including cross-border estates); and capacity issues / OPG applications.

She has experience of advising entrepreneurial clients, trustees and landed estates.   

Alexandra is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

Alfie Hayes

Alfie is an investment sales consultant and is a key point of contact for IFAs, brokers and DFM clients. He works alongside Andy Austin, responsible for the East.  

Before joining Rathbones in 2016, Alfie worked as a broker at BGC for four years, before spending a year at Franklin Templeton on the sales desk. Alfie holds a BA (Hons) Politics degree from the University of Leeds.
