Mark Nicholls

Mark is a lawyer and corporate financier and was appointed as chairman at our 2011 AGM. After studying law at Cambridge, he qualified as a solicitor at Linklaters before joining S G Warburg in 1976. He became a director in 1984 and head of investment banking in 1994. In 1996 he joined Royal Bank of Scotland and became head of their private equity group, leaving in 2003 to pursue a plural career. He is currently chairman of the West Bromwich Building Society and a non-executive director of Northern Investors Company PLC. He is considered to be independent. 

Philip Howell

Philip is chief executive and was appointed in 2013. Following an early military career, Philip spent over 30 years in the investment banking and private banking sectors, undertaking a range of leadership roles as well as gaining considerable general management experience. He was with Barclays for 24 years, which included leadership assignments in Asia and South Africa and subsequently as head of strategy and corporate development focused on the international and private banking divisions. He continued his involvement in private wealth management, firstly as chief executive of Fortis Private Banking and subsequently of Williams de Broë. Philip is a graduate of the Harvard Business School, Advanced Management Programme.

Paul was appointed group finance director in 2008. He qualified as a chartered accountant with PriceWaterhouse in 1992. In 1999 he joined Old Mutual Plc as group financial controller, becoming director of finance in 2001 and finance director of Gerrard Limited eight months later. Two years after the sale of Gerrard in 2005 he left to work initially for Euroclear and, subsequently, as a divisional finance director of the Phoenix Group. He is also a non-executive director of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

Sarah Gentleman

Sarah was appointed as a non-executive director in 2015 and chair of the remuneration committee in June 2017. She started her career as a consultant at McKinsey and Company and then worked for several years in the telecoms and digital sectors, latterly as chief financial officer of the LCR Telecom Group. In 1999, she joined the internet bank Egg, the internet banking subsidiary of Prudential, where she was responsible for business development and strategy. In 2005, she joined Sanford C. Bernstein & Co, the institutional research and trading arm of Alliance Bernstein as a banking analyst covering the European banking sector. Sarah graduated from Cambridge with a degree in Natural Sciences and also has an MBA from INSEAD.

Kathryn Matthews

Kathryn was appointed as a non-executive director in 2010 and chair of the risk committee. She has spent her entire career in investment management, most recently as chief investment officer, Asia Pacific (ex Japan) for Fidelity International. Prior to that, she held senior appointments with William M Mercer, AXA Investment Managers, Santander Global Advisers and Baring Asset Management. She is a non-executive director of Aperam S.A., J P Morgan Chinese Investment Trust Plc, and BT Investment Management Limited. She is on the board of trustees of the Nuffield Trust and is a non-executive member of the Council of the Duchy of Lancaster. She retired as a non-executive director of Hermes Fund Managers Limited.

James was appointed as a non-executive director in 2013 and chair of the audit committee in 2014. He is a chartered accountant with over 30 years’ experience working in financial services. James worked in a variety of roles at Ernst&Young over a period of 14 years, including holding the position of managing partner for the UK Financial Services Audit Practice for four years. He holds a number of other non-executive directorships including Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society and is chairman of The Stafford Railway Building Society.

Jim was appointed as a non-executive director at our 2017 AGM and our senior independent director in august 2017. He is Chairman of CYBG PLC, The Edinburgh Investment Trust plc, Scottish Financial Enterprise and RBC (Europe) Ltd. He is also senior independent director of Crest Nicholson Holdings Plc. He is a chartered accountant and was formerly Chief Executive Officer of CMC Markets UK plc, Chief Operating Officer of Ashmore Group plc and Group Finance Director of ICAP plc. He was previously, non-executive director of Aberdeen Asset Management plc, AON UK Ltd, Hermes Fund Managers Ltd and the immediate past President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. 

Aaron McLoughlin

Aaron Mcloughlin is a Senior Financial Planner in London with over 10 years of experience in Financial Services, and has joined Rathbones from Kleinwort Benson, where he was Head of Financial Planning. Prior to this he worked with the financial planning team at Lloyds Private Bank covering their London Mayfair office.

Aaron is a Chartered Financial Planner, a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society, and is a qualified Trust and Estate Practitioner, with a specialist qualification in UK Tax Planning for International Clients, from The Society for Trusts and Estate Planning (STEP).

Aaron has significant experience in providing holistic financial advice to Individuals, Corporates, and Trustees. He helps clients across a broad range of areas including protecting their wealth, retirement planning, investment structuring, and has a particular interest in advising on complex tax and succession planning.

Adrian Maxwell

Adrian joined Rathbones in 2004 following completion of his Financial Economics degree. Adrian joined the business as an Investment Manager’s Assistant and following continuing professional development has earned promotion to his current position as Investment Director.

Adrian is a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charter holder and member of the CFA Institute. In addition, Adrian is a chartered member of the CISI (Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment), having attained the Diploma and, as noted above, Adrian has an honours degree in Financial Economics from the University of Liverpool.

Adrian specialises in the management of Charities and Private Clients. Adrian invests in all asset classes on behalf of his clients, but is particularly enthusiastic about equity investments. Adrian is a member of the Group Stock Selection Committee.

Alan Dobbie

Alan joined Rathbones in October 2005. He became manager of Rathbone Blue Chip Income and Growth Fund in January 2012 and co-manager of the Rathbone Heritage Fund in March 2013.

He graduated from the University of Strathclyde with an MSc Finance and also holds degrees in Accounting and Chemical Sciences from the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, respectively. Alan holds the IMC (Investment Management Certificate) and is a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charter-holder.

Alan Martin is an investment director for Rathbone Investment Management International and manages a range of private client, trust, corporate and charity portfolios. Alan is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment.

Alan began his career in offshore finance in 1987 with AIB Bank in Jersey and prior to joining Rathbones in October 2012, he was responsible AIB’s offshore investment proposition.

Alastair Childs is an investment director and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment.

Alastair has spent his entire working career in private client investment management in London, starting in 1984 at Vickers da Costa. Alastair joined Laurence Keen, which subsequently became part of Rathbones, in 1992.

Alastair McLean is a Chartered Wealth Manager and Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment. He has a law degree from The University of Dundee as well as an MBA from the University of Strathclyde Graduate School of Business.
 
He joined James Finlay Investment Management in 1987 where he worked as an investment manager until the company was acquired by Brewin Dolphin in 1996 where he served as a divisional director until joining Rathbones in 2015. 
 
Alastair has over 25 years of experience in private client investment management. He grew up in England but was educated in Scotland and works across the UK with a diverse client base specialising in the management of family wealth. He has long experience in collectives management as well as direct equity and bond market investment.
 
He has been a member of the Glasgow City Committee for Macmillan Cancer Support for the past ten years.

Alex Clay

Alex joined Rathbones as an investment director in 2002 and manages a large portfolio of high net worth private clients, their SIPPs and associated trusts. He started his investment career in London over 30 years ago at Henderson Administration where he trained. He subsequently helped establish the private client fund management department within Murray Johnstone before moving to Premier Asset Management.

Alex is a Chartered Wealth Manager and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments.

Alex Dow is investment director, he has a joint honours degree in politics, philosophy and economics from UEA. Alex is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments, holding the diploma, and is also a Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder.

Prior to joining Rathbones in December 2007, Alex worked at HSBC Investments (formerly James Capel) for eight years managing investment portfolios for charities and private clients. At HSBC Alex was a member of the UK Stock Committee and specifically covered the engineering, aerospace and defence sectors.

Alex Moore is a Research Analyst, joining Rathbones in May 2015. Alex sits within the Collectives Research Team and carries out quantitative and qualitative analysis to select funds for recommended use within portfolios managed at Rathbones. Prior to joining Rathbones, Alex worked for the British Steel Pension Fund and Dimensional Fund Advisors, specialising in Asia-Pacific and Emerging Markets equity portfolio management. Alex graduated from the University of Durham with a BA (Hons) in Economics. He holds the Investment Management Certificate, is a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment, and is a CFA Charter holder.

Alex is director of tax at Rathbones and has been advising private clients and business owners for 20 years. Alex specialises in providing capital gains and inheritance tax advice and has a wide range of experience in  all areas of private trust work.

Alex Turnbull

Alex Turnbull is an investment director, his main focus is in managing assets for the not for profit, pension and corporate sector with a bias towards structuring segregated asset portfolios. He has particular expertise in corporate debt and equities, and where possible has a preference for direct investment of these asset classes. He chairs the charity asset allocation and stock committee and also sits on the UK equity and fixed income committee for the Investment Management division of Rathbones.
Alex is chartered fellow of the securities institute and holds the securities institute diploma, having qualified in 1989. Prior to joining Rathbones in 2008 he spent 20 years at HSBC Global Asset Management (formerly James Capel) where he was responsible for developing and leading the successful charity division.

Alexandra Jackson

Alexandra is the manager of the Rathbone UK Opportunities Fund. Previously she was co-manager of the Rathbone Recovery Fund, appointed in June 2014, and has spent over 10 years with Rathbones.

Alexandra joined Rathbone Unit Trust Management in 2007 as an equity analyst, and then became assistant fund manager on the Rathbone Global Opportunities Fund.

Alexandra is a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charter-holder and holds the Investment Management Certificate. She has a BA (Hons) in Economics from the University of Durham. She is a member of the Rathbone Investment Management Stock Selection Committee and co-chairs REN, the Rathbones Engagement Network.

Alfie Hayes

Alfie is an Investment Sales Consultant and is a key point of contact for IFAs, brokers and DFM clients. He works alongside Neil Kerry, responsible for the North. 

Before joining Rathbones in 2016, Alfie worked as a broker at BGC for 4 years, before spending a year at Franklin Templeton on the Sales desk.

Alfie holds a BA (Hons) Politics degree from the University of Leeds.

Ali Johnson

Ali joined Rathbones on 1 April 2016 and was appointed Company Secretary on 1 May 2016. Prior to joining Rathbones, Ali spent 9 years as Director of Company Secretarial Services at Signet Jewelers having responsibilities for a wide variety of areas and functions during this time.   Ali graduated in law and is a Fellow of Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. 

Amanda Browning

Amanda Browning is a Senior Financial Planner for the Bristol Office with over twenty years experience of advising wealthy individuals on a wide range of financial planning matters including inheritance tax mitigation, generational wealth succession, family and business protection and pension planning.

Amanda Joined Rathbones in October from Coutts where she was an Investment Manager for four years. Prior to this she spent twenty years at Lloyds Private Banking covering a broad spectrum of financial and investment planning. She holds qualifications as a Chartered Financial Planner and as a Chartered Wealth Manager.

Amanda is a Fellow Chartered member of the Chartered Insurers Institute as well as a Chartered member of The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments.

Amos Nelson

Amos works closely with James Fox in the management of investment portfolios for private clients, charities and self-invested personal pensions.

He is a graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Bristol and currently holds the Masters in Wealth Management and the Investment Management and Financial Planning Certificates.

Amos is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and sits on our Collectives Research Committee. 

Amy Kirby

Amy joined Rathbones on an apprenticeship scheme in September 2013 after completing her A-Levels. She began working in operations before joining the investment management team to assist Investment Directors.

Amy is a Chartered Member of the CISI, having obtained the Chartered Wealth Manager qualification in 2017. She is the youngest person to have completed this qualification. Amy is a member of the Rathbones Fixed Income and Macro Sub Committee.

Andrea Hanley is an Investment Manager in our Glasgow office and provides discretionary management for private clients, pensions, trusts and charity portfolios.

Andrea started her investment career with Brewin Dolphin in April 2004 and has achieved her Diploma in Investment Compliance and her Private Client Investment Advice and Management qualification.  She is also a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment.

Andy is an Associate Sales Director at Rathbones, responsible for the South and the East Midlands. He joined Rathbones in September 2014, having spent over 2 years as a Senior Client Relationship Manager for Schroders. Andy brings over 10 years’ sales’ experience, having also worked at M&G in a variety of client-focused roles.

Andrew Dawson Paul is an investment director with over twenty years’ experience of managing discretionary investment portfolios for private individuals, their pensions and family trust structures. He also manages investments for charities including a City Livery Company.

After graduating from Durham University, Andrew joined the City stockbroking firm of Laurence Keen and qualified as a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment. Laurence Keen was acquired by Rathbones in 1995.

Andrew Hess is an investment director, managing discretionary investment portfolios for private individuals, their pensions, trusts and charities, he also manages investments for city livery companies. 

Andrew is a member of the Rathbones Strategic Asset Allocation Committee and the Fixed Income, Macro and Credit fund selection Committee. He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and has over twenty years experience in the private client industry. 

Prior to joining Rathbones, Andrew started his career at Smith Keen Cutler and Gerrard Vivian Gray.  He then joined Albert E Sharp as a director in 1997 before joining Rathbones in 2000.

Andrew Mackintosh-Walker is an investment director and deputy head of the Edinburgh Office, graduating from St Andrews University with a 2:1 MA Hons in Theology.

Andrew was made an investment director in 2008 and is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment. On leaving university he joined Merrill Lynch International Private Client Group, working initially in London before joining their Edinburgh team.

In August 2000, he joined Rathbones where he continues to manage investments for private individuals, personal pension funds, charities and trusts. Andrew takes a keen interest in corporate governance and is a member of the Rathbones Corporate Governance Committee.

Andrew Morris is responsible for Rathbones’ Investment Management business in the UK outside London. He also manages a large number of client portfolios. He has spent his entire working career at Rathbones in private client investment management and joined the group executive committee in July 2015.
