Our story

Our long journey to become one of the top 3 largest UK wealth managers is like no other.

Proud of our past, excited for our future

We started as a family-run timber merchant in 1742, and by 1912 focused entirely on managing our clients’ wealth. We marked our 250th anniversary in 1992 by joining the London Stock Exchange. It was a milestone that showed how far we’d come, and reaffirmed our commitment to growth and transparency.

Today, we are one of the top 3 largest UK wealth managers as reported by Platforum, with 3,500 people across over 20 offices in the UK and Channel Islands.

Established in 1742

In 1742 Rathbones was established as a Liverpool timber business.

Growing what we offer

Acquisitions have always been part of the Rathbones story. They expand the services we can offer our clients, while driving growth in an ever-changing world.

Saunderson House’s expert planners joined us in 2021. This team have significant experience working with accountants and legal professionals, allowing us to help clients with increasingly specialist needs.

And joining forces with Investec Wealth & Investment (UK) in 2023 has expanded our discretionary offering while unlocking services that let our clients enjoy seamless wealth and investment solutions all under one roof.

Our commitment to responsibility

Rathbones has always been committed to responsible investing – launching our first ethical investment options in 1997. In 2004, we took it a step further by establishing Greenbank, our specialist sustainable investment team.

We also like to share our success by supporting charities across the country, through the Rathbones Group Foundation.

Proud to be a supporter

From education to sport to the arts – we’re passionate about supporting projects we know are important to our clients.

In particular, we run projects and partner with organisations that support young people, giving them opportunities to acquire knowledge and develop financial awareness.

As a group, Rathbones is proud to support a number of initiatives either as a member or signatory.
