James McNab

James McNab is an Investment Director specialising in the management of private client, SIPP and trust portfolios, as well as adviser introduced client portfolios. James graduated from The University of Liverpool in 2006 with an honours degree in Accounting and Finance. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the CFA Institute, as well as a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment. Prior to joining Rathbones in 2017, he spent 10 years at The Bank of New York Mellon.

Connor joined Rathbones in October 2020 as part of the Graduate Programme. He graduated from Northumbria University with a First-Class Honours Degree in Business Management, having won the Hewitson Award for the highest overall mark obtained in the Newcastle Business School. During his studies, he completed a 1-year placement at Asset Risk Consultants. Connor obtained the Investment Advice Diploma in 2021 and is currently studying towards the Level 7 Chartered Wealth Manager qualification.

I am part of a team of investment managers solely dedicated to investing in portfolios of equities listed on AIM (Alternative Investment Market) for clients across the business. The primary objective of our AIM IHT portfolios is to mitigate inheritance tax liabilities for investors, with a focus on reducing volatility whilst still generating an attractive investment return. We manage over 2,000 individual client portfolios each with a position in between 20-40 companies.

I joined Rathbones in 2024 as a Trainee Investment Manager. My role involves supporting Investment Managers and Investment Directors with client servicing and portfolio administration, responding to client queries, and learning the intricacies of investment management. I am currently studying towards the Chartered Wealth Manager qualification with the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments.
I began my career in 2023 with The McKnight Financial Group as a Trainee Financial Adviser, where I gained foundational experience in financial planning and client engagement.

I work closely with two of the investment directors in the Birmingham office to support them in the construction and management of bespoke investment portfolios for a range of private individuals, intermediaries, corporates, trusts and charities. Alongside building on relationships with our existing clients, my role includes regularly monitoring portfolios to ensure they remain suitable for each individual’s objectives and developing new investment ideas.
