Protecting your wealth from today's scammers

30 April 2026

Fraud is now one of the fastest-growing crimes in the UK, fuelled by rapidly advancing technology and increasingly sophisticated criminal networks. To explore how these scams work, why they’re becoming harder to spot, and the practical steps you can take to stay safe, we spoke to author and financial crime awareness advocate Tracy Hall. Watch the recording or read the insight she shared from her personal experience and her deep understanding of the evolving threat landscape.

A personal story with a universal lesson

Tracy’s experience changed the course of her life. Over 18 months, she was groomed by someone she believed to be a successful investment professional. In reality, he was a long-established global fraudster who stole her life savings and manipulated her trust at every turn.

Her story highlights a crucial truth: fraud is rarely about intelligence or education. It often hinges on timing, emotional vulnerability and the calculated skill of scammers who use psychology, technology and patience to build credibility. As Tracy reflected, “It can happen to any of us”, and recognising that is a key part of being prepared.

The evolving threat: how scams are changing

Want clearer guidance on how to protect yourself against fraud?

In this on-demand session, Tracy Hall shares her personal experience of fraud and explains how modern scams work. She explores why scams are becoming harder to spot and outlines practical steps you can take to help protect yourself and your loved ones.

Today’s scams are often driven by large, well-organised criminal syndicates. Tracy described two types of operations that stood out:

  • Pig-butchering scams: highly structured, international operations, frequently based in Southeast Asia. Using AI-generated scripts, stolen data, and long grooming cycles, they encourage victims to invest increasing amounts before draining accounts completely.
  • “Yahoo boys”: cybercriminal groups, many operating from West Africa, who use deepfakes, social-engineering tactics and sextortion schemes targeting both adults and children. Reports of these cases have risen sharply, with the UK seeing an 800% increase in a single year.

AI is accelerating these threats. Criminals are adopting advanced face-swapping tools, hyper-realistic voice cloning technology and emotionally responsive chatbots at pace, often years ahead of publicly available technology. As a result, many traditional checks, such as “just join a video call”, are no longer reliable protections.

Why we're all at risk

Fraudsters rarely focus on breaking systems, they focus on influencing people. Tracy outlined four psychological levers that underpin many modern scams:

  1. Emotional hijacking: fear, excitement or hope disrupting rational thinking
  2. Urgency: pressure to “act now” without checking details
  3. Heuristics and biases: our natural shortcuts, such as trusting authority or familiarity
  4. Vulnerability: life events such as divorce, bereavement, illness, moving home, or simply being busy or tired, which temporarily lower our guard.

Understanding these triggers and how criminals operate helps people pause, reflect, and break the pattern scammers depend on.

Practical steps to strengthen your protection

Tracy highlights simple, everyday habits that can make a meaningful difference:

  1. Verify before you trust: If an organisation contacts you unexpectedly, independently check their details via official websites. Don’t use the phone numbers or links they provide.
  2. Protect your digital footprint: Lock down privacy settings, limit the information you share publicly and be cautious about accepting unknown contacts. Even everyday posts can be used to build convincing narratives.
  3. Use simple tech tools wisely: Reverse-image searches, domain lookups and even AI tools can quickly flag if something looks suspicious.
  4. Create a family password: A shared code can act as a safeguard if you receive a call or message from someone claiming to be a family member in distress, a common tactic in voice-cloning scams.
  5. Change your voicemail: Replace personalised voicemail greetings with the system default to reduce the likelihood of voice-cloning attempts.
  6. Talk openly about money: Fraud thrives on secrecy. Discussing unusual messages or unexpected “opportunities” with trusted friends, family or your adviser adds an essential layer of protection.

If you think you've been targeted

Acting quickly is vital:

  • Contact your bank immediately
  • Report the incident to Action Fraud
  • Seek emotional support, as shame is a major barrier to reporting and recovery

As Tracy explained, “Any loss, large or small, matters. You worked hard for it.”

Resilience, awareness and the value of expert support

Despite the impact of her experience, Tracy’s message remains grounded and optimistic: with awareness, openness and support, people can navigate this environment more safely. Her guidance is clear: “Trust but verify. And then verify again.”

At Rathbones, we believe that trusted financial advice is an important part of that support. An adviser who knows you, understands your circumstances and can help you sense-check anything that doesn’t feel quite right.
