Why moving abroad is more complex than it looks
For many of our clients, the idea of living abroad – whether retiring to warmer climes or relocating for a new chapter – starts as an aspiration. But the moment it becomes a plan, the financial complexity becomes real. Property purchases, tax residency, succession planning, and portfolio strategy all need to be considered together, not in isolation.
The good news? With the right advice, and enough time to act on it, the options available to you are often far greater than most people realise. Planning early may preserve more options and allow more time to consider their implications.
The motivation to move
In our experience, international relocations are often driven by lifestyle considerations, financial efficiency, or a combination of the two.
Lifestyle motivations can include retirement in a preferred climate, a long-held dream of a home in the sun, or simply the desire for greater flexibility in how and where you live.
Financial considerations may also play a role. For those with substantial wealth, moving to a jurisdiction with a more favourable tax environment – particularly around inheritance tax or capital gains tax – can have a meaningful long-term impact on what you're able to pass on.
Understanding which is driving your decision, and in what proportion, shapes everything that follows.
Start the conversation earlier than you think you need to
The single most important piece of advice our experts offer is this: start planning before you're ready to move. The earlier you engage with your advisers, the more options remain open to you. Once you've changed your tax residency, signed a property contract, or moved assets, some planning opportunities may no longer be available.
Pre-immigration advice taken before you physically relocate is not a luxury. For clients with complex financial affairs, it's essential.
How you hold your property matters enormously
Whether you buy a holiday home abroad in your own name, through a family structure, or via a corporate vehicle has significant consequences for ongoing taxation, wealth tax exposure, succession planning, and control.
Many jurisdictions operate forced heirship rules (which may dictate who inherits part of an estate regardless of the terms of a will) that differ fundamentally from UK succession law. What feels like a straightforward property purchase can, without the right structure, create unintended outcomes for your estate and your family.
Getting the ownership structure right from the outset is far easier and far less costly, than trying to unwind it later.
Assembling the right team
No single adviser can cover every dimension of a client's financial life. At a minimum, you need wealth managers, tax advisers, and lawyers working in close coordination. When international moves or overseas property purchases come into play, that team expands further to include international tax specialists, real estate consultants, and offshore trustees.
Our Private Office acts as the coordinating point – running the process on your behalf, ensuring every specialist is working from the same picture of your financial life to avoid decisions being considered in isolation.
